Board of Directors candidate

current position:

Professor and Dean, College of Health Sciences
Old Dominion University
2114 Health Sciences Building

I am completing my first term as a Board Member of ASAHP and am enthusiastic to accept the nomination to run for a second term. I have recently served as the Chair of the Nominations and Elections Committee (2013-2015) and am currently the board liaison to the Advocacy Committee. My involvement with ASAHP began in 2000 with numerous activities including presenter, moderator, peer reviewer, committees, and being the ASAHP representative to the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care from 2002-2009. ASAHP has an important role in leveraging networking, member assistance, leadership development, policy and advocacy, continuing as the recognized voice for the umbrella of allied health profession while also providing leadership for deans, associate/assistant deans, chairs and directors. If it were possible to capture all of the collaborations and new ideas that have occurred through ASAHP meetings and publications, I believe we would be truly amazed about the ways new programs, disciplines, and research have evolved as a result.  My aspirations for ASAHP include being a leader for interprofessional and interdisciplinary work that promote education, research and service across the allied health professions and the spheres of influence where we engage. I applaud ASAHP for becoming an institutional member of the Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC), for adding an employer member to the organization and for efforts toward establishing an interprofessional student organization. Since many of our Colleges also include Schools of Nursing and Public Health Programs, I believe ASAHP provides a unique venue for establishing even more partnerships and advocacy across health and public health. As the world is increasingly global, I aspire that ASAHP consider a larger role in global health through its strategic goals, programming, networking, advocacy and seed funding. I believe through ASAHP, our members will network and collaborate in new ways to navigate the anticipated, sweeping changes in health care. The next few years will be transformational not only for health care as a whole, but ASAHP in particular.  I believe that ASAHP has done much already to enhance the allied health professions and would welcome this opportunity to contribute further to advancing the organization’s strategic vision and goals.
