Nominations & Elections Committee Candidate
Dean, College of Health Sciences
Midwestern University, Downers Grove Campus
555 31st Street | Downers Grove, IL 60515
I have been Dean of Midwestern University College of Health Sciences since 2012. I received my doctoral education in the Department of Physiology at Loyola University of Chicago and postdoctoral education in the Department of Physiology at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. I joined the Physiology faculty at Midwestern University in 1990. In 2001, I developed the Master of Biomedical Sciences program in the College of Health Sciences at the Downers Grove campus and directed this research-based program for the next five years. From 2006 to 2010, I chaired the Department of Physiology and served as Assistant Director of Research on Midwestern University’s Glendale, AZ campus. I returned to IL in 2010 and served as the Associate Dean for the College of Health and Sciences for the next two years. I am a cardiovascular physiologist who instructs both medical and allied health students. My research has been funded by the American Diabetes Association, the American Heart Association, and NIH.
As a basic scientist who was promoted into the position of dean of a college of health sciences, I had much to learn. I have taught cardiovascular physiology to physical therapy, occupational therapy, and physician assistant students for many years. However, subjects such as affiliation agreements, accreditation studies, and clinical rotation management were completely new areas of focus. Our program directors were, and still are, very patient and willing to educate me in the practice and advancement of their professions. In the last few years, I have come to appreciate what each of the professions in my college has to offer to the healthcare community and their areas of concern for educating our students to serve that community. ASAHP has given me the opportunity to discuss these issues with other administrators and learn from them.
For several years I’ve been a member of the IPE Strategic Planning Committee. I concur with other members of the committee that ASAHP should be the leader in interprofessional education and practice by the very nature of our membership. As a member of this committee, I will strive to work with my colleagues to bring ASAHP to the forefront in these areas. As a member of the Nominating and Election committee, I would be diligent in recruiting nominees who are committed to advancing ASAHP as one of the best positioned organizations to influence education and healthcare in the United States.
